In most countries, Good Friday is the last Friday before Easter. It is celebrated as a national holiday. The aim of the day is to remind people of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. However, the exact day of Good Friday is not absolute. In the countries which accept the Orthodox calendar as their official calendar the day may change.
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are probably the most important things in all Christianity. Following the last supper, Jesus was caught in the Garden of Gethsemane and put on trial which resulted in him being sentenced to death. During his crucifixion, he was nailed by the wrists and feet to a large wooden cross, tortured mercilessly, and left to die. This is the origin of the symbol of Christianity we see everywhere, the cross.
The main purpose of Good Friday is to mourn. Some people meditate on Jesus' death and crucifixion during special services held on Good Friday and try to emphasize what this suffering means for their faith.
In the UK, pastries are really important for Lent. Usually, people start it by making Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and end it with Hot Cross Buns which is a religious dish. These sweet spiced buns with currants or raisins have a cross shape on top which is made by shortcrust pastry and a sticky glaze. This cross shape represents the cross Jesus was crucified on and this is the main reason they are considered religious and traditionally consumed on Good Friday.
Every year there is an act in Trafalgar Square, London which is an open air play depicting the crucifixion, and thousands of Brits gather to be able to watch this annual performance. It is also completely free. It can be considered as a 90 minute gift for everyone who wants to watch such an act.
